How Braces — And The Damon System — Actually Work

Braces use brackets bonded to the surface of each tooth, connected by a wire. That wire is the engine, it applies gentle, continuous pressure that slowly guides teeth into proper alignment. The brackets are the steering wheels, directing where each tooth moves.
What sets our approach apart is the Damon System. Traditional braces use small elastic ties (ligatures) to hold the wire in the bracket. Those ligatures create friction and require more force to move teeth. The Damon bracket has a built-in sliding door which virtually eliminates the friction entirely. The result: lower forces, less inflammation, and a more comfortable process from start to finish.
— Why This Matters Lower force application means less stress on your teeth and surrounding tissue throughout treatment. Most of our patients are surprised by how comfortable the process actually is.

Type Of Braces We Offer

Four options under one expert team. Choose the bracket; we'll handle the clinical decision-making
01 — Metal
Damon Metal
Braces
The gold standard in self-ligating braces. Durable, precise, and more efficient than any traditional metal brace. We've exclusively used Damon metal brackets since 2005. You can still add colors — they're purely decorative and don't affect performance.
02 — Clear
Damon Clear
Braces
The same self-ligating technology as Damon metal, in a tooth-colored ceramic bracket. No ligatures means no staining — your braces stay clear-looking through the entire treatment, even after coffee or pasta sauce.
03 — Same-Day
Same-Day
Start
If our doctors determine you're ready to start, we begin treatment the same day as your consultation. No second trip needed. We keep time reserved in our schedule specifically for this, because we know your time matters.
04 — Two-Phase
Two-Phase
Treatment
Phase I (ages 6–10) guides jaw growth and makes room for permanent teeth. Phase II (around 12–13) aligns teeth once most are in. Early treatment simplifies Phase II, often avoiding extractions.

Two-Phase Treatment For Children

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first evaluation by age 7. About 20% of children benefit from early treatment — and timing matters.
Phase I · Ages 6–10
Interceptive Treatment
Phase I addresses significant jaw width deficiencies, severe crowding, and developing teeth growing in at problematic angles. Although we only recommend treatment on 20% of the younger patients we see, we recommend everyone is screened so nothing is missed. Many of the most complicated problems can be avoided with early detection.
Phase II · Around 12–13
Full Treatment
Phase II begins after the remaining permanent teeth have come in. Because Phase I has already addressed the structural foundation, Phase II is typically shorter and more efficient. We fine-tune alignment, perfect the bite, and deliver the Amazing Smile every patient came for.

What to Expect — And How It All Works Out

What to Expect During Treatment
After brackets are placed, you'll come in every 6–10 weeks for wire adjustments. Expect mild soreness for a few days after each appointment — similar to the feeling after a workout. It passes quickly.
You'll avoid hard, sticky, and chewy foods throughout treatment to prevent bracket damage. Most patients have 1–2 repair visits over the course of treatment. With a little care while eating, the process is completely manageable.
We schedule your next appointment before you leave each visit, so getting a convenient time is easy.
Financing and Insurance
We work with most dental insurance plans and use OrthoFi, the most flexible payment platform in orthodontics. Most plans run zero interest. Most families fit treatment into the $200–$300/month range. Extended low-interest plans are available for longer timelines.
Orthodontics also qualifies for HSA and FSA programs, which means you can pay with pre-tax dollars. If you have an orthodontic insurance benefit (typically $750–$1,500 in metro Detroit), apply that first, then cover the rest with pre-tax HSA or FSA funds for maximum savings.
Michigan does not have a Medicaid orthodontic program. We offer extended financing options to help make care accessible for all families regardless of coverage.
After Braces: Retention
Once treatment ends, we scan your teeth digitally — no messy molds — to create custom retainers. Retainers are essential: teeth naturally want to shift back toward their original positions. Once your scan is on file, we can mail replacement retainers directly to you. No additional fitting appointment needed.
Retention is for life. Wearing your retainers as directed is the only way to protect the result you worked for.
